Short History of the Persian Cat

According to legend, a magician produced the first Persian cat by bringing together a bright flame, a puff of smoke, and the light from two distant stars. In actuality, the origins of these cats are unknown, but it is thought that they are descendants of the first long-haired cats seen in ancient hieroglyphics.

Numerous legends exist about how the first fluffy felines entered the Western hemisphere. Some historians believe they were brought to Europe by crusaders in the 14th century. In contrast, others contend that Persian cats arrived in the 16th century with sailors who brought them home as prizes. It is believed that some Persian cats originated in modern-day Iran, while others originated in Turkey.

Regardless, these beautiful cats quickly became the preferred pets of European royal families and even decorated Queen Victoria’s parlors. In the 1870s, when the first organized cat display in London featured Persian cats, interest in the breed increased.

Simultaneously, the first Persian cats were transported from Europe to the United States, where cat clubs were immediately founded, and cat shows were staged. Mrs. Clinton Locke (Lockehaven) was one of the first cat breeders in America. Her cats won numerous competitions.

Are Persian Cats Hypoallergenic?

There are no hypoallergenic Persian cats. Even though no cat is completely hypoallergenic, Persian cats are not allergy-friendly. They produce more protein and shed more than other breeds. Cats of the Persian breed have an average level of the Fel d1 protein, which can produce symptoms like a runny nose or watery eyes.

No cat breed is 100% hypoallergenic, meaning there is no assurance that it will not provoke your allergies. Regardless of what an advertisement for cats may claim, if you are allergic to them, every cat will cause your allergies to flare up. However, the type of fur on some cat breeds will not aggravate your allergies.

Do Persian Cats Make Good Pets?

Persian cats are an entertaining breed. Even if their origin is rather dubious, they are the ideal breed for anyone who desires a cat who behaves like a dog. If you are willing to brush them frequently and treat them like royalty, Persian cats are the ideal breed for you.

Conclusion

Persian cats are known to be gentle, friendly, and pleasant. They are very affectionate with children but do not jump up on them. Persian cats have a reputation for being relaxed, calm, and easygoing. They are intelligent but never highly strung or demanding.
