Short History of the Maine Coon cat
In the northeastern United States, the Maine Coon emerged naturally. Though many urban legends assert that the Maine Coon is descended from bobcats or raccoons, they are descended from housecats brought to America by early immigrants. The breed has grown huge and resilient, with a dense, shaggy coat. These characteristics were required for cats to survive and prosper in the region’s harsh winters. Although cats of the Maine Coon kind were probably well-known throughout New England, they were especially popular in Maine. Beginning in the 1860s, farmers began exhibiting their prized “coon cats” at the Skowhegan Fair, which dates back to 1818 and is the nation’s longest-continuously hosted agricultural fair. Here, the ancestors of the modern Maine Coon breed fought for the title of State Champion Coon Cat of Maine.
Cosey, a female brown tabby Maine Coon, won what is considered the first American cat show, held on May 8, 1895, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The first stud book and breed registration of the Cat Fanciers’ Association, published in 1908, identifies the Maine Coon as a foundation breed (“Maine Cats”). Additionally, the breed is acknowledged by the International Cat Association. In 1985, the Maine Coon was designated the official cat of Maine.
Are maine coons hypoallergenic?
The Maine Coon is not a hypoallergenic breed. No cat breed is allergen-free, as all cats generate the allergenic protein Fel d 1 to some degree. Certain cat breeds, such as the Siberian and Sphynx, are considered hypoallergenic due to their reduced levels of this protein. Regular grooming, bathing, and vacuuming will minimize allergies in cats.
