TICA and CFA Certifications
Something to look out for – although it’s not a dealbreaker – is for a breeder to be either TICA or CFA certified.
Both of these organizations require breeders to follow strict, ethical practices to be registered with them
Here’s what these organizations mean:
The International Cat Association (TICA) is the world’s largest purebred cat registry and the only global organization that represents all breeds of cats.
TICA was founded in 1967 and currently has more than 190 member associations, with more than 20,000 members in 90 countries.
The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) is the largest, most experienced, and most respected cat registry in the world.
The CFA has become the single source for all things related to cats and cat fanciers. It has a membership of over 165,000 people worldwide who own purebred cats or subscribe to their periodicals.
How Much Do Ragdoll Cats Cost?
A quick disclaimer; pricing of Ragdolls and any exotic cat can vary a great deal and there are a number of things that can affect the price.
To give you a rough idea, however, taking into account the pricing from a bunch of breeders you can expect to pay somewhere in the range of:
Type of Ragdoll | Approximate Price |
---|---|
Household Pet | $500+ |
Specialist Coloring | $1,500-3,000+ |
Show Quality | $2,000-3,000+ |
Purebred Quality | $2,000-3,000+ |
Additional Resources
There is no shortage of enthusiastic Ragdoll owners out there, you just need to know where to look!
A good place to start is Reddit, one of the largest online platforms for people with shared interests to hang out and share information.
The Ragdoll community is pretty big. It had 25k+ members at the time of writing this. If you have any questions as a new – or expecting – Ragdoll owner, it’s a great place to ask.
Another resource I wanted to share is AdoptaPet.com. AdoptaPet is a good choice if you’re not able to find available kittens from the above breeders, or if you just want to adopt a Ragdoll in need of a home.
There is nothing wrong with adopting a new kitten. But there is something very rewarding about giving an older cat a new home and a higher standard of living.
Are Ragdoll Cats High Maintenance?
Ragdolls get a bad rap for being high-maintenance when they’re really not. I think this is due to the fact that they’re often seen as show cats, and they’re big cats.
If you want to show your Ragdoll, then yes, it’s going to be high-maintenance getting them into show condition.
For a household pet, however, Ragdolls are low-maintenance. You do need to brush them regularly, as you do with most cats.
This is the extent of the hands-on maintenance though. In fact, Ragdolls are known for being very laid back and not demanding a lot of attention.
They’re ideal for quieter homes for that reason. They don’t like a lot of noise and foot traffic and are happiest curled up on a lap on their favorite spot to sleep.
Do Ragdolls Make Good Pets?
Ragdolls are exceptionally friendly and affectionate cats that make excellent companions. They can fit right into a busy, or single-person home when introduced as kittens.
They are also known for their brilliant personalities, which makes them great pets for people who prefer calm, well-adjusted animals with a good disposition.
It’s crucial to remember that kittens can be playful, and even a little rambunctious. Kittens may scratch or bite when they get excited, and that is completely normal.
Ragdolls are known for their thick coats of fur, so it’s not uncommon for them to shed. It’s important to groom them often with a damp cloth to keep their fur looking and feeling nice.
The bottom line is; if you’re willing to put in the time to groom and play with your Ragdoll, they’re going to provide you with endless hours of fun and affection.
They’re real cat-people cats, that’s for sure!
