TICA and CFA Certifications
You may have seen some breeders saying they are TICA and CFA certified. This is an extra stamp of approval that they registered their cats and are maintaining a high standard.
Here’s what these organizations mean:
The International Cat Association (TICA) is a major player in worldwide cat registries. Founded in 1967, TICA was created as an alternative to the American Cat Fanciers Association (which used mixed breeds to register their cats).
TICA is the world’s largest and oldest association for cat enthusiasts and breeders. It has over fifty years of experience in registering purebred cats from all over the world.
The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) is a non-profit, international organization devoted to the advancement of purebred cats through breeding, showing, and educational programs.
Founded in 1906, it is the largest purebred cat registry in North America. CFA has more than 300 affiliated clubs in North America and has offices on both coasts of the United States.
What Is the Average Price of a Ragdoll?
The average price of a Ragdoll kitten varies a lot depending on where you buy it, how old it is, and if it’s pedigree.
For example, looking at a couple of California breeders, the cost for a kitten is around $1,000. While I have seen them going for around $500 in some other states.
That said, I’ve looked at the pricing for several breeders, and here is the best estimate I can give you:
Type of Ragdoll | Approximate Price |
---|---|
Household Pet | $500+ |
Specialist Coloring | $1,500-3,000+ |
Show Quality | $2,000-3,000+ |
Purebred Quality | $2,000-3,000+ |
Additional Resources
There is no shortage of enthusiastic Ragdoll owners out there, you just need to know where to look!
A good place to start is Reddit, one of the largest online platforms for people with shared interests to hang out and share information.
The Ragdoll community is pretty big. It had 25k+ members at the time of writing this. If you have any questions as a new – or expecting – Ragdoll owner, it’s a great place to ask.
Another resource I wanted to share is AdoptaPet.com. AdoptaPet is a good choice if you’re not able to find available kittens from the above breeders, or if you just want to adopt a Ragdoll in need of a home.
There is nothing wrong with adopting a new kitten. But there is something very rewarding about giving an older cat a new home and a higher standard of living.
Are Ragdoll Cats High Maintenance?
Ragdoll cats are playful, relatively laid back, and very sweet. The only thing you really need to be prepared for is brushing them a couple of times a week.
Not only are their coats naturally longer than short-haired breeds, but they also require a little more care than other breeds to avoid matting.
If you enjoy grooming your cat – and it’s a great way to bond – then it’s not going to be a chore.
Personally, I don’t mind giving my cats a brush when I’m spending time with them. So, I don’t really see Ragdolls as high maintenance for that reason.
But I can appreciate why some owners don’t want to do it. They also love attention and interacting with us and other animals, so make sure you have plenty of interactive toys.
Are Ragdolls Good Family Pets?
Ragdolls are great family pets! That’s not me being biased, they have the perfect temperament for house cats and adapt well to their surroundings.
The reason why Ragdolls are one of the most popular exotic breeds to be commonly kept as house pets is because they’re so friendly.
Ragdolls are fairly big, but they’re big softies. Their docile temperament makes them perfect for houses with kids of any age, and they enjoy the company of other animals.
If anything, they’re much happier in busier homes as they do need company. But they’re still cats at the end of the day, you can go out without worrying about them.
Then there’s the brushing as I mentioned above. You or someone in your home needs to be willing to give them a good brush a few times a week.
As long as those basic needs are met, I can’t imagine anything less than a Ragdoll being the perfect addition to your home.
