TICA and CFA Certifications
You may have seen some breeders saying they are TICA and CFA certified. This is an extra stamp of approval that they registered their cats and are maintaining a high standard.
Here’s what these organizations mean:
The International Cat Association (TICA) is a major player in worldwide cat registries. Founded in 1967, TICA was created as an alternative to the American Cat Fanciers Association (which used mixed breeds to register their cats).
TICA is the world’s largest and oldest association for cat enthusiasts and breeders. It has over fifty years of experience in registering purebred cats from all over the world.
The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) is a non-profit, international organization devoted to the advancement of purebred cats through breeding, showing and educational programs.
Founded in 1906, it is the largest purebred cat registry in North America. CFA has more than 300 affiliated clubs in North America and has offices on both coasts of the United States.
What Is the Average Price of a Ragdoll?
The price of a Ragdoll cat will depend on where you get it from. The average price for a Ragdoll cat is $600 to $1500. I do see them in the $2000 to $3000 range for show-standard or pedigree though.
Ragdolls are usually bought from breeders as they are classed as rare and exotic. But you can sometimes find them at animal shelters for a much lower price.
Are Ragdoll Cats High Maintenance?
If you’re looking for an easy-going, low-maintenance pet, a Ragdoll cat may not be the one for you. But if you’re willing to put in the work and really care about your Ragdoll’s well being, they can make a great addition to any home.
Ragdolls are known as “high maintenance” cats because they require regular grooming sessions to maintain their long hair.
Ragdolls are part of the “Longhair” cat group, which also includes Persians and other longhaired cats. The primary issue with long-haired cats is that their coats mat very easily, and over time can become extremely matted or refuse to lie down completely.
Personally, I don’t mind putting in the time to brush my cats when I’m spending time with them. So, I don’t always see them as ‘high maintenance’, I guess it comes down to how you perceive having to groom your cat.
Colors and Coat Patterns of Ragdolls
Ragdolls come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Traditionally speaking, however, there are six different colors.
These are:
- Red
- Seal
- Blue
- Lilac
- Cream
- Chocolate
There are also four different coat patterns as follows:
Bicolor – This means the cat will have white legs, an inverted ‘V’ on its face, and usually white patches on its body.
Colorpoint – This is the ‘classic’ Siamese coloring. Darkening at the extremities; like the ears, tail, paws, and nose.
Mitted – Similar to a colorpoint, but Mitted cats have white paws and abdomen. They must have a stripe running down their body, too.
Blue Point – This is the term for a blue-colored Ragdoll with grey on its points. So, a grey face, tail, paws, and ears.
Something cool to be aware of is that ragdolls are a ‘pointed’ breed. This means, they are born white, then colors appear on their ‘pointed’ areas; such as the face, ears, paws, and tail.
Do Ragdolls Make Good Pets?
Ragdolls really do make great pets.
In short – if you’re looking for a mellow companion who won’t rip your house apart or keep you up all night with their meows, then a ragdoll might be perfect for you.
Some of the main pros of ragdolls are:
They’re gentle giants – They are large cats. Females are typically in the 8-15 lbs range, while males typically weigh as much as 20 lbs. They’re super soft and friendly though, often referred to as ‘gentle giants’.
Easy going – Ragdolls are not particularly active. They can get bored easily though, which means it’s good to keep them entertained with toys.
Affectionate – Who doesn’t want an affectionate cat? Ragdolls are very affectionate, both with their owners and with each other if you have more than one. Plenty of petting and fussing goes a long way!
If all of that sounds perfect to you, what are you waiting for?!
On the other hand, if you want a cat that’ll leave you alone and doesn’t require any brushing, you will need to look at different breeds.
