TICA and CFA Certifications
Something to look out for – although it’s not a dealbreaker – is for a breeder to be either TICA or CFA certified.
Both of these organizations require breeders to follow strict, ethical practices to be registered with them
Here’s what these organizations mean:
The International Cat Association (TICA) is the world’s largest purebred cat registry and the only global organization that represents all breeds of cats.
TICA was founded in 1967 and currently has more than 190 member associations, with more than 20,000 members in 90 countries.
The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) is the largest, most experienced, and most respected cat registry in the world.
The CFA has become the single source for all things related to cats and cat fanciers. It has a membership of over 165,000 people worldwide who own purebred cats or subscribe to their periodicals.
Additional Resources
There is no shortage of enthusiastic Ragdoll owners out there, you just need to know where to look!
A good place to start is Reddit, one of the largest online platforms for people with shared interests to hang out and share information.
The Ragdoll community is pretty big. It had 25k+ members at the time of writing this. If you have any questions as a new – or expecting – Ragdoll owner, it’s a great place to ask.
Another resource I wanted to share is AdoptaPet.com. AdoptaPet is a good choice if you’re not able to find available kittens from the above breeders, or if you just want to adopt a Ragdoll in need of a home.
There is nothing wrong with adopting a new kitten. But there is something very rewarding about giving an older cat a new home and a higher standard of living.
What Is the Average Price of a Ragdoll?
The average cost for a Ragdoll kitten is around $500 to $3,000, but there are many factors that affect the price.
For example, some breeders will charge more for kittens with unusual coloration or patterns. As they will for show standard cats with a strong pedigree.
This is something to discuss in detail with a breeder before making a decision. To give you a rough idea, however, here is what you can expect to pay:
Type of Ragdoll | Approximate Price |
---|---|
Household Pet | $500+ |
Specialist Coloring | $1,500-3,000+ |
Show Quality | $2,000-3,000+ |
Purebred Quality | $2,000-3,000+ |
Are Ragdoll Cats High Maintenance?
The main concern I hear about Ragdolls is that they’re high maintenance. The good news is that this really isn’t the case.
They do require regular brushing, typically 2-3 times a week. This will help prevent their fur matting and tangling and keep on top of shedding.
If you brush them from an early age – as I’m sure you will – brushing your Ragdoll is something they’ll enjoy, and something that will help you bond with them.
They also have a docile and easygoing nature, fit in well with other pets and kids. They do love to play, but that’s never a chore.
If you’re buying from a breeder, they’ll probably ask you about other pets and kids in your home. They’ll then explain how to best help them settle in.
Do Ragdolls Make Good Pets?
Absolutely, Ragdolls are awesome pets!
One thing – you will be amazed at their size and weight. Ragdolls are a large breed, with males weighing between 15-20 pounds and females being between 12-18 pounds.
They are known to be laid-back and gentle giants. These cats are great for families with older children because of their large size, and hardiness.
Many people do enjoy the friendly affectionate nature that these cats possess as well as the large size that keeps them warm.
As kittens, they are a lot of fun and really enjoy playtime. Make sure you have some decent interactive toys and set up some fun obstacles around your home or a cat tree.
As they age, you’ll see their character coming out and appreciate how affectionate they are.
If you’re after a big cute, cuddly friend, that’ll become an integral part of your family, Ragdolls are for you.
