What Are Maine Coons Like as Pets?
Maine Coons are great family pets. I’m not just saying that, they really are. They’re lovable, big cuddly kitties with a nice temperament and curious nature.
Some of the characteristics Maine Coons are know for include:
Size – It’s hard to talk about Maine Coons without talking about how huge they are. It is, after all, the most unique and obvious thing about them. On average, male Maine Coons are around 13-18 lbs, and females are 8-12 lbs.
Loving – They have a soft, social, and loving personality. Although heavy, they love curling up on a lap and receiving some fussing.
Curious – They do have a curious nature. My Maine Coon was always hunting, getting high up into trees, into boxes around the home etc.
Chatty – This is a pro for most owners, but a con for some. Maine Coons can be pretty vocal, so be prepared to be told when it’s time for food, when you need to open the door, and some other things.
Fun – Best of all, they’re loads of fun. From playing for hours, to fussing them on your lap, it’s always fun seeing and interacting with these gentle giants.
How Much Does a Maine Coon Kitten Cost?
We have to keep budgets in mind when looking for exotic breeds. Maine Coons are generally not that rare or expensive, you can find most in the ballpark of $500-$1,500.
This can go up thousands for the rarer colors and kittens with a pedigree background, or course. It’s something to discuss with a breeder when you make contact with them.
How Much Does a Maine Coon Cat Cost?
There are plenty of adult Maine Coons in need of a good home. If you want to adopt an adult, it’s often just as rewarding and gives one of these cats a much needed loving home.
Adults are much less expensive. In fact, you can often adopt Maine Coons for around $100 or so to help cover the shelter’s fees or a small donation to help them keep operating.
TICA and CFA Certifications
You may have seen some breeders saying they are TICA and CFA certified. This is an extra stamp of approval that they registered their cats and are maintaining a high standard.
Here’s what these organizations mean:
The International Cat Association (TICA) is the world’s first and largest all-breed cat registry.
In 1967, a small group of dedicated cat lovers met to form a small organization. They shared their love of cats, and it wasn’t long before they were planning for their first show in 1968 in the city of Chicago, Illinois.
The Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) is a non-profit organization of cat fanciers who are dedicated to the study, preservation, and promotion of felines.
This organization has a membership of over 165,000 people worldwide who own purebred cats or subscribe to their periodicals.
Caring for Your Maine Coon
Before you bring a Maine Coon home, you need to know what you’re letting yourself in for. Don’t worry, it’s all good – but there is a little work involved.
The two main things you need to be aware of is that Maine Coons require a good amount of exercise and regular grooming.
If you can give them access to the wide outdoors where they can climb, hunt, and explore, this will pretty much help them get all the exercise they need.
It also helps to have some strong cat furniture designed to withstand these beasts. And of course, they love to spend time playing with you.
For grooming, it’s advisable that you give them a quick brush at least once a day. This will help stop knots and tufts forming in their coats.
It will also greatly reduce the number of loose hairs floating around your home, which for me personally is something I’m willing to put in the time to avoid.
Exercise and grooming needs met, Maine Coons just require the basic stuff all cats need. This means, a couple of nice quiet spots to sleep, fresh drinking water, plenty of good food, and the occasional treat.
That’s it! Pretty simple, and you have yourself a big fluffy, lovable friend that’s going to provide endless entertainment for you.
