A Little History of The British Shorthair
It’s believed the British Shorthair dates back as far as the first century, although the cats we see today will be very different from those!
They were created by crossing British domestic cats with Persian and Russian Blue cats.
The goal was to create a Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) recognized breed that would have the best qualities of each.
And that’s exactly what happened – the British Shorthair is now recognized by the CFA and is one of the most popular pedigree breeds.
How Much Does a British Shorthair Cat Cost?
British Shorthair cats are not cheap. Prices for British Shorthair kittens typically range from $1,500 to $3,000 USD, and adult British Shorthairs can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,000 USD.
This can of course be a lot higher if you’re buying a rare pedigree or a Shorthair with unique markings, a rare color, and so on.
British Shorthairs are not an impulse purchase, and potential owners should be prepared to spend a significant amount of money on their new cat.
Tips When Choosing a British Shorthair Breeder or Cattery
When looking for a British Shorthair breeder, it is important to do your research and choose one that is reputable.
There are many things to look for when choosing a breeder or cattery, but some of the most important things include:
- The condition of the cats and kittens – they should be clean, healthy, and obviously well-cared for
- The environment – it should be clean, spacious, and comfortable, the cats should be allowed to roam free and not caged up
- The breeder’s or cattery’s knowledge about the British Shorthair breed – they should be able to answer any of your questions confidently and accurately
Doing your research beforehand will help you find a British Shorthair breeder or cattery that you can trust, and that will increase the chances of you bringing home a happy and healthy British Shorthair kitten!
Make Sure You Read the Adoption Policy Closely!
When you’re ready to adopt, be sure to read the British Shorthair adoption policy carefully for the cattery you’re going with.
It’s important to make sure that you’re comfortable with all the terms and conditions before bringing your new cat home!
Adopting a British Shorthair – or any cat for that matter – is a huge decision, so be sure to do your research and ask plenty of questions before signing the contract.
Do British Shorthair Cats Make Good Pets?
If you’re thinking of adopting a British Shorthair cat, you need to make sure they’re going to be a good fit within your household.
The good news is that British Shorthairs are known for being gentle, affectionate, and low-maintenance cats.
They are also relatively quiet compared to other breeds of cats, which makes them ideal for apartments or homes with small children.
British Shorthairs do require regular grooming, however, to keep their fur looking its best.
So, if you’re looking for a laid-back and loving cat breed, the British Shorthair is definitely worth considering!
