A Little History of The British Shorthair
The British Shorthair is a domesticated cat that has been bred in Great Britain since the early 1800s.
The British Shorthair is a large, muscular cat with a short, dense coat of fur that can be blue, black, white, or silver-gray in color to mention just a few of the more popular colors.
The British Shorthair has a very distinctive broad head with round cheeks, and its eyes are large and round. Its body is compact and solid, and its legs are short and thick.
How Much Does a British Shorthair Cat Cost?
British Shorthair cats are not cheap. Prices for British Shorthair kittens typically range from $1,500 to $3,000 USD, and adult British Shorthairs can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,000 USD.
This can of course be a lot higher if you’re buying a rare pedigree or a Shorthair with unique markings, a rare color, and so on.
British Shorthairs are not an impulse purchase, and potential owners should be prepared to spend a significant amount of money on their new cat.
Tips When Choosing a British Shorthair Breeder or Cattery
When looking for a British Shorthair breeder, it’s important to do your research and make sure that you’re dealing with a reputable breeder or cattery.
There are not a lot of British Shorthair breeders and catteries out there, and I did my best to verify the ones I listed are highly rated, TICA/CFA registered, and check all of the other boxes.
But it’s on you to do your own research and make sure you’re adopting a kitten from an ethical breeder.
Be sure to visit the breeding facility in person, meet the parents of the kitten you’re interested in if possible, and ask lots of questions.
A good breeder should be able to answer all of your questions and put your mind at ease.
Make Sure You Read the Adoption Policy Closely!
When adopting a British Shorthair kitten from a breeder, be sure to read the adoption policy carefully.
Many breeders will have strict requirements in place, such as mandating that you get your new cat spayed or neutered at a certain age, requiring that you take them to regular vet appointments, and so on.
You will find all the legal terms and conditions and everything else you need to know about your purchase in this document.
You’re spending a lot of money, so please read it carefully.
Do British Shorthair Cats Make Good Pets?
British Shorthair cats make awesome pets, but you need to check that their personality matches up with your household.
They are relatively low-maintenance cats that don’t require a lot of grooming, this is pretty much always a plus.
They are also social cats that enjoy the company of their human families and get along well with other pets in the home.
British Shorthairs are also relatively quiet cats and won’t meow or yowl excessively.
So, if you’re looking for a laid-back, easy-going cat that will be a loving and loyal companion, the British Shorthair is an excellent choice.
