A Little History of The British Shorthair
It’s believed the British Shorthair dates back as far as the first century, although the cats we see today will be very different from those!
They were created by crossing British domestic cats with Persian and Russian Blue cats.
The goal was to create a Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) recognized breed that would have the best qualities of each.
And that’s exactly what happened – the British Shorthair is now recognized by the CFA and is one of the most popular pedigree breeds.
How Much Does a British Shorthair Cat Cost?
British Shorthair kittens typically range from $1,500 to $3,000 USD, and adult British Shorthairs can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,000 USD.
It’s fair to say that British Shorthairs are not an impulse purchase and that potential owners should also be prepared to spend a significant amount of money on their new cat.
But they are worth every penny!
Tips When Choosing a British Shorthair Breeder or Cattery
When looking for a British Shorthair breeder, it’s important to do your research and make sure that you’re dealing with a reputable breeder or cattery.
There are not a lot of British Shorthair breeders and catteries out there, and I did my best to verify the ones I listed are highly rated, TICA/CFA registered, and check all of the other boxes.
But it’s on you to do your own research and make sure you’re adopting a kitten from an ethical breeder.
Be sure to visit the breeding facility in person, meet the parents of the kitten you’re interested in if possible, and ask lots of questions.
A good breeder should be able to answer all of your questions and put your mind at ease.
Make Sure You Read the Adoption Policy Closely!
When you’re ready to adopt, be sure to read the British Shorthair adoption policy carefully for the cattery you’re going with.
It’s important to make sure that you’re comfortable with all the terms and conditions before bringing your new cat home!
Adopting a British Shorthair – or any cat for that matter – is a huge decision, so be sure to do your research and ask plenty of questions before signing the contract.
Do British Shorthair Cats Make Good Pets?
If you’re thinking of adopting a British Shorthair cat, you need to make sure they’re going to be a good fit within your household.
The good news is that British Shorthairs are known for being gentle, affectionate, and low-maintenance cats.
They are also relatively quiet compared to other breeds of cats, which makes them ideal for apartments or homes with small children.
British Shorthairs do require regular grooming, however, to keep their fur looking its best.
So, if you’re looking for a laid-back and loving cat breed, the British Shorthair is definitely worth considering!
