When they obtained a sable male Burmese cat for their six-year-old daughter, Ahava-Burms Cattery was established in the year 2000. Jane, their mentor, and dear friend asked if they wanted to exhibit their cat in competition, and the rest is history. Once they got hooked, Ahava-Burms was up and breeding adorable kittens within six months. They have met wonderful people, bred and shown champion cats over the years, and placed adoring kittens with wonderful families.

They enjoy exhibiting their cats and find it extremely exciting when their cats are given prestigious awards. Their kittens are like their children, and they adore them and only want the best homes for them. Their main objective is to place every kitten in the ideal home. They  raise their kittens in a clean environment and without cages and they give every kitten a name.

The owner of this cattery fell in love with the Burmese breed while promoting her handmade items at CFA events. She had been considering a few breeds of purebred cats to start with, but she fixed her mind when a group of Burmese stopped in front of her craft booth at a show. She was certain that the Burmese cat was the one she wanted by the end of the same day.

She had always admired their looks but had never realized how loving and caring they really were until that moment. They love people, are not overly shy, are social enough to be entertaining, and she hasn’t yet come across one who has a short temper. She now raises and sells these lovely animals and wants others to feel the same love.

Short History of the Burmese Cat

In 1930, Dr. Joseph C. Thompson brought Wong Mau, a Burmese cat, to the United States. He later bred Wong Mau with the assistance of other cat breeders, and this is how the Burmese breed started to develop.

Sadly, because of this breed’s popularity, hybrids started to replace pure Burmese in the show hall in 1947. The Cat Fanciers’ Association’s show regulations forbid the showing of hybrids, and as a result, the Burmese’s recognition was revoked. When the Burmese Cat Society of America gave the registries assurances that it wouldn’t happen again in 1953, this recognition was finally revived.

Do Burmese Cats Shed?

Because of their genetic resemblance to the Siamese cat, Burmese cats do indeed shed significantly less than other cats. They are a great choice for cat owners who have a busy schedule and don’t have time to regularly groom their cats because they shed less and need less grooming as a result of having extremely short hair coats.

Tips When Choosing a Burmese Cat Breeder or Cattery

The following considerations should be made when selecting a Burmese cat breeder or cattery:

  1. Verify to see if their cats are hybrids or Siamese cat crosses.
  2. They operate a neat and tidy breeding facility.
  3. All of their cats must have documentation of their vaccinations and dewormings.
  4. Their cats have basic training and use a litter box
  5. Their cats are social and friendly when approached
  6. Their cats shouldn’t be allowed much access to the outside environment
  7. Ideally, they should be affiliated with a cat organization like CFA

How Much Does a Burmese Cat Cost?

In general, you can expect to pay between $1,000 and $1,500 for a decent pedigree Burmese kitten or cat. However, purebred Burmese cats with champion bloodlines can sell for nearly $2,000. Location, breeder popularity, the cat’s competition history, awards, and lineage can all affect the cost of a Burmese.
