Tips When Choosing a Breeder or Cattery
It’s exciting looking around for a new kitten, but it can also feel a little daunting. There is a lot to take into consideration, but it’s not difficult if you know what you’re looking for.
A few of the key things to consider or do are:
Getting to know the breeder – The more you can know about a breeder that is going to supply your kitten, the better.
Buying a kitten is more than just a transaction. You want to know that the breeder cares about their cats as much as you will, and they should act professionally.
Ask about vaccines – Vaccinations are important for kittens and help defend against serious diseases.
Make sure you ask which vaccinations they give their kittens, which are expected from owners, and any other relevant information.
Meet the parents – It’s always important you meet the parents of a kitten, and this should be welcomed by a breeder.
You want to see that the parents are in good health and are being well cared for. It’s also nice to see and get a pic of your kitten’s mom.
Legal paperwork – Buying a kitten is an emotional purchase, but there is some legal paperwork that shouldn’t be skipped.
Make sure you know what your rights are should something happen with the kitten after you take it home.
What TICA and CFA Registered Means
You’ll see some breeders and catteries displaying the logos for the TICA or CFA.
If they are registered with either of these organizations, it demonstrates they are committed to a high standard of care.
The International Cat Association (TICA) and The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) are organizations where breeders can register pedigree cats.
They also promote ethical business practices, provide a wide range of resource materials, and hold world-class cat shows.
How Much Do Bengals Cost?
Like all pedigree exotic cat breeds, Bengals vary a lot in price depending on their traits and some other factors.
That said, looking at the price list for a number of breeders you can expect to pay something in the range of:
Type of Bengal | Approximate Price |
---|---|
Household Pet | $1,500+ |
Specialist Traits | $2,500+ |
Show Quality | $3,500+ |
You should be aware that it’s normal for breeders to ask for a large, non-refundable deposit.
This is to cover the costs associated with breeding and caring for the kitten, so make sure you’re 100% sure before making a decision.
Are Bengals Good Family Pets?
Bengals are awesome family pets, yes.
This isn’t me being biased, just ask anyone who owns a Bengal and I’m sure you’re going to get a similar answer.
Bengals are known for their friendly and social personalities, and they love interacting with other animals and people.
They are much better suited to busy households, although you can still have a happy Bengal if you’re out at work all day and leave them some interactive toys and furniture then make up for it with loads of playtime in the evening.
You do have to take into account that they require a little more interaction than other breeds though. Bengals are big cats with plenty of energy and retain their playful nature long into adulthood.
But the bottom line is, if you’re after an active, playful, personable cat with a unique look, a Bengal is going to be a perfect choice.
Do keep in mind that all breed information and profiles are general, every cat has their own personality!
