What to Look For in a Breeder or Cattery
Searching for a new kitten, especially a specialist breed and an expensive one like a Bengal can be a little daunting.
It’s not that difficult, however, when you find the right breeder I’m sure they will help you through every step of the process.
To find the right breeder for you, here are some things to consider:
Are they local? – Finding a breeder as near to you as possible is always ideal – although I understand it’s not always possible with a kitten as rare as a Bengal.
If you can find a local breeder it will enable you to visit them (if permitted), and it just makes communications, collecting the kitten, and so on easier.
What are the terms? – You can’t afford to get carried away when you spot a cute kitten or get your heart set on a litter before discussing the terms.
You do need to know where you stand should the worst-case scenario happen and there is a problem with the kitten in some way.
Can you see the parents? – When Adopting a kitten from a new litter it’s important that you’re able to visit the parents.
This is to ensure the parents are healthy and kept to a high standard of care. Plus, it’s also nice to know where your kitten is coming from, isn’t it?
Don’t worry, there isn’t much to remember. When you find a reputable and experienced breeder they will talk you through every step of the way.
What TICA and CFA Registered Means
Just like any business or profession, there are some organizations that govern and oversee ethical business practices.
In the case of pedigree cats, these are The International Cat Association (TICA) and The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA).
If you want added peace of mind, check a breeder is a member of one or both of these organizations.
How Much Do Bengals Cost?
I cannot give you an accurate price, as the cost of a Bengal can vary by several thousand dollars.
As a general rule of thumb, however, you can expect to pay something in the range of:
Type of Bengal | Approximate Price |
---|---|
Household Pet | $1,500+ |
Specialist Traits | $2,500+ |
Show Quality | $3,500+ |
You should be aware that you will have to put down quite a large non-refundable deposit when reserving a kitten.
This is to cover the costs associated with raising the kitten and it’s ready to leave its mom. So don’t reserve a kitten before you’re 100% sure you’re ready to home it.
Do Bengal Cats Make Good Family Pets?
It’s fair to say that Bengal owners are among the most enthusiastic cat owners.
If you ask anyone who owns a Bengal, I’m sure you’re not going to hear a bad word about them.
There really aren’t any downsides. As long as you have the space, some sturdy cat furniture, and plenty of time to play with your Bengal, I’m sure they’ll make a perfect addition to your home.
Bengals are obviously very unique looking with their stunning marbled or spotted patterns. But it’s their personalities that really win people over.
They are big softies, they love to play, are very social and personable, and are amongst the most intelligent cat breeds!
Do keep in mind that all breed information and profiles are general, every cat has their own personality!
