What to Look For in a Breeder or Cattery
Picking up a Bengal kitten is a huge moment in anyone’s life, so you want to make sure you don’t rush in and make a mistake.
The few things to consider when looking for a breeder or a cattery, are:
How accessible are they? – The more accessible and personable a breeder is, the better sign this is that you’re going to have a good experience.
Buying a Bengal is not something you should do entirely online. You should at least speak to the breeder in person, or visit the cattery in person before making a decision.
Can you meet the parents? – Meeting the parents of the kitten you’re going to be reserving and learning about their history is important.
Essentially, you’re checking they are in good health and well cared for, and personally, I also think it’s nice to see the parents.
Read the paperwork – Although it’s a transaction that’s led by the heart, buying a Bengal cat is expensive that comes with some legal terms.
Make sure you’re fully aware of what your rights are, and what you can do if something doesn’t work out.
Reputable and experienced breeders should happily talk you through the whole process. They will have a contract for you to sign and should have some care sheets.
TICA and CFA Membership and Certifications
A lot of breeders and catteries are members of either The International Cat Association (TICA) or The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA).
These are organizations that register pedigree cats and provide lots of helpful resources for breeders.
It’s not a deal-breaker if a breeder isn’t a member of an organization, but it’s added peace of mind if they are.
What Does a Bengal Cat Cost?
Bengals vary a lot in price. There are lots of factors, such as the pedigree of the parents, traits, costs associated with raising them, and so on that affect the price.
To give you a general idea of what you can expect to pay, I took a look at the price list on some breeder websites.
Here is a rough estimate of how much Bengal cat will cost you:
|Type of Bengal||Approximate Price|
Do keep in mind that you have to put down a large non-refundable deposit when you reserve a kitten.
This is to cover the costs that the breeder has and to safeguard them from being out of pocket if you change your mind.
Are Bengals Good Family Pets?
The main appeal of Bengals for most is their striking looks. Bengals look like wild cats, and it’s no surprise as they were bred from the Asian Leopard Cat and a domestic cat.
There have been a number of other breeds used in the foundation of Bengals, too. The history of a kitten is something to talk about with a breeder when you’re shopping around.
But it’s their personalities that win people over. Generally speaking, Bengals are friendly and affectionate, they love to play, are curious… all the things we love about cats, right?
They’re big cats, and remain playful long into adulthood. Bengals do require some challenging cat furniture to burn off explosive energy, but that’s simply resolved with a good cat tree.
If you’re looking for an exotic-looking cat that is a bundle of fun with a big personality, I think a Bengal is going to be perfect for you.
Do keep in mind that all breed information and profiles are general, every cat has their own personality!
