Tips When Choosing a Breeder or Cattery
It’s exciting looking around for a new kitten, but it can also feel a little daunting. There is a lot to take into consideration, but it’s not difficult if you know what you’re looking for.
A few of the key things to consider or do are:
Getting to know the breeder – The more you can know about a breeder that is going to supply your kitten, the better.
Buying a kitten is more than just a transaction. You want to know that the breeder cares about their cats as much as you will, and they should act professionally.
Ask about vaccines – Vaccinations are important for kittens and help defend against serious diseases.
Make sure you ask which vaccinations they give their kittens, which are expected from owners, and any other relevant information.
Meet the parents – It’s always important you meet the parents of a kitten, and this should be welcomed by a breeder.
You want to see that the parents are in good health and are being well cared for. It’s also nice to see and get a pic of your kitten’s mom.
Legal paperwork – Buying a kitten is an emotional purchase, but there is some legal paperwork that shouldn’t be skipped.
Make sure you know what your rights are should something happen with the kitten after you take it home.
What TICA and CFA Registered Means
Not all breeders will be TICA or CFA registered, and it’s certainly not a requirement. But it does demonstrate that they’re committed to certain high standards.
The International Cat Association (TICA) and The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) are organizations that register pedigree cats and breeders.
They also hold catteries to high standards and provide information on what kind of vaccinations, tests, and other checks breeders should be carrying out.
What Does a Bengal Cat Cost?
Bengals vary a lot in price. There are lots of factors, such as the pedigree of the parents, traits, costs associated with raising them, and so on that affect the price.
To give you a general idea of what you can expect to pay, I took a look at the price list on some breeder websites.
Here is a rough estimate of how much a Silver Bengal cat will cost you:
Type of Bengal | Approximate Price |
---|---|
Household Pet | $1,500+ |
Specialist Traits | $2,500+ |
Show Quality | $3,500+ |
Do keep in mind that you have to put down a large non-refundable deposit when you reserve a kitten.
This is to cover the costs that the breeder has and to safeguard them from being out of pocket if you change your mind.
Do Bengal Cats Make Good Family Pets?
It’s fair to say that Bengal owners are among the most enthusiastic cat owners.
If you ask anyone who owns a Bengal, I’m sure you’re not going to hear a bad word about them.
There really aren’t any downsides. As long as you have the space, some sturdy cat furniture, and plenty of time to play with your Bengal, I’m sure they’ll make a perfect addition to your home.
Bengals are obviously very unique looking with their stunning marbled or spotted patterns. But it’s their personalities that really win people over.
They are big softies, they love to play, are very social and personable, and are amongst the most intelligent cat breeds!
Do keep in mind that all breed information and profiles are general, every cat has their own personality!
