Choosing the Right Breeder or Cattery
I know what an important decision it is to reserve or adopt a new kitten. Here are a few tips and things to consider to help you find the best breeder for you:
Are they local? – Finding a breeder as near to you as possible is always ideal – although I understand it’s not always possible with a kitten as rare as a Bengal.
If you can find a local breeder it will enable you to visit them (if permitted), and it just makes communications, collecting the kitten, and so on easier.
Check the paperwork – Buying a kitten is an emotional purchase, but there is some legal paperwork that shouldn’t be skipped.
Make sure you know what your rights are should something happen with the kitten after you take it home.
Meet the parents – You should always try and meet your prospective kitten’s parents before you make a decision.
Not only is it nice to see their parents, but you also want to be sure they’re in good health and well-treated.
Generally speaking, the best tip is to make decisions with a cool head and not be led by your heart if you see a cute kitten and fall in love with it!
TICA and CFA Membership and Certifications
A lot of breeders and catteries are members of either The International Cat Association (TICA) or The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA).
These are organizations that register pedigree cats and provide lots of helpful resources for breeders.
It’s not a deal-breaker if a breeder isn’t a member of an organization, but it’s added peace of mind if they are.
How Much Do Bengals Cost?
I cannot give you an accurate price, as the cost of a Bengal can vary by several thousand dollars.
As a general rule of thumb, however, you can expect to pay something in the range of:
Type of Bengal | Approximate Price |
---|---|
Household Pet | $1,500+ |
Specialist Traits | $2,500+ |
Show Quality | $3,500+ |
You should be aware that you will have to put down quite a large non-refundable deposit when reserving a kitten.
This is to cover the costs associated with raising the kitten and it’s ready to leave its mom. So don’t reserve a kitten before you’re 100% sure you’re ready to home it.
Are Bengals Good Family Pets?
Bengals are awesome family pets, yes.
This isn’t me being biased, just ask anyone who owns a Bengal and I’m sure you’re going to get a similar answer.
Bengals are known for their friendly and social personalities, and they love interacting with other animals and people.
They are much better suited to busy households, although you can still have a happy Bengal if you’re out at work all day and leave them some interactive toys and furniture then make up for it with loads of playtime in the evening.
You do have to take into account that they require a little more interaction than other breeds though. Bengals are big cats with plenty of energy and retain their playful nature long into adulthood.
But the bottom line is, if you’re after an active, playful, personable cat with a unique look, a Bengal is going to be a perfect choice.
Do keep in mind that all breed information and profiles are general, every cat has their own personality!
