Adopting a Munchkin in Utah

If you were not able to find what you were looking for or any expected litters from the above breeders, you could consider adopting a Munchkin.

Adopting a cat from a shelter or a rescue is always a satisfying thing to do. It means you’re giving a cat another chance at living in a home with a loving family.

If you’re considering it or interested to learn more, here are a couple of places to look:

Both of these sites are large databases that connect you with thousands of cat rescues and shelters across the U.S.

TICA and CFA Certifications

You may have seen some breeders saying they are TICA and CFA certified. This is an extra stamp of approval that they registered their cats and are maintaining a high standard.

Here’s what these organizations mean:

The International Cat Association (TICA) is the world’s first and largest all-breed cat registry.

In 1967, a small group of dedicated cat lovers met to form a small organization. They shared their love of cats, and it wasn’t long before they were planning for their first show in 1968 in the city of Chicago, Illinois.

The Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) is a non-profit organization of cat fanciers who are dedicated to the study, preservation, and promotion of felines.

This organization has a membership of over 165,000 people worldwide who own purebred cats or subscribe to their periodicals.

What’s the Average Cost of a Munchkin Kitten?

There are a lot of things to take into account when pricing a Munchkin kitten. The pedigree, color, markings, and variation can all affect the price by a large amount.

To give you a ballpark figure, however, you can expect to pay between $800-$2,000 from a reputable breeder.

What’s the Average Cost of a Munchkin Cat?

Some breeders and other sellers will have adult Munchkins for sale. You can typically expect to pay a little less than you would for a kitten.

Again, depending on the age, health condition, and history of the cat, you can expect to pay anywhere between $500-$1,800.

Interesting and Fun Facts About Munchkin Cats

Known as ‘dwarf cats’, and ‘sausage cats’, to say that Munchkins are unique felines would be an understatement.

Here are some of the most interesting and fun facts about this breed to help you get to know them a bit better:

  • Their legs are around 3 inches shorter than an average cat.
  • They are known to be playful and kitten-like long into adulthood.
  • Munchkins are named after the Munchkins from The Wizard of Oz.
  • They are one of the newest cat breeds, only being officially recognized in 1991.
  • A Munchkin holds the record for the shortest living cat at 13.34cm (no surprise).

Caring for Your Munchkin

Munchkins are super easy to care for. The fact that they don’t go outside or need to get as much exercise as ‘regular’ cats is a bonus for busy owners that do not have a lot of time.

This doesn’t mean you can neglect them though! Munchkins love playing. In fact, it’s said they retain their playful, kitten-like characteristics longer than a typical cat.

So, it’s ideal if you can make time to play with them. Also, some cat furniture like a tree, or some small obstacles will increase their happiness and give them something to do when you’re not around.

Just remember to get furniture that caters to their small legs! Munchkins are nowhere as agile, or adept at climbing as other breeds.

All you really need to do is brush them once a week or so, provide quality food and fresh water, and you’ll have a happy little Munchkin on your hands.

Are Munchkins Good Pets?

Munchkins are a great choice as a family pet. They’re sociable, great with kids and other pets, curious, loads of fun, and will give you loads of love back.

They’re a relatively new breed in the feline world, so there isn’t much known about any long-term health issues. It’s assumed by some that they may suffer from some back problems, just as sausage dogs do.

There is no evidence to back this up though. If you make sure they maintain a healthy weight and feed good quality nutrition, the risk of any health issues is low.

One of the features you see most owners talking about is how playful their Munchkins are, even long into adulthood.

Not only do they look like kittens longer than most cats, but they also act and behave like they are kittens. It’s a lot of fun playing with them, and there are rarely dull moments (except maybe all those hours when they’re sleeping).

There are really no drawbacks to owning this dwarf, mini-me breed. If you have any concerns or questions, I recommend contacting a breeder and asking them.
