Adopting a Munchkin in Michigan

If you were not able to find what you were looking for or any expected litters from the above breeders, you could consider adopting a Munchkin.

Adopting a cat from a shelter or a rescue is always a satisfying thing to do. It means you’re giving a cat another chance at living in a home with a loving family.

If you’re considering it or interested to learn more, here are a couple of places to look:

Both of these sites are large databases that connect you with thousands of cat rescues and shelters across the U.S.

Average Cost of a Munchkin Kitten

Munchkins are fairly popular in some parts of the world, like Japan. However, in the U.S. they’re still fairly rare and seen as an exotic breed.

Therefore, they are fairly expensive. It’s hard to say how much you’ll pay, as there are a few things that can affect the price a lot. Such as pedigree, markings, colors, etc.

Generally speaking, however, you can expect to pay around $800-$2,000. But don’t be surprised to see a much higher price tag for rarer colors.

Average Cost of a Munchkin Cat

Some breeders will sell older Munchkins, or you may be able to find one in need of a new home. They will typically cost less than a newborn kitten.

Depending on their age, health, and so on you can expect to pay in the range of anywhere between $300-$1,800.

Some Facts About Munchkin Cats

Also known as ‘drawf cats’ and ‘sausage cats’, it’s no surprise that Munchkins are a unique and interesting looking breed.

Here are some facts about this breed that you may not have known about:

  • Munchkins’ legs are around 3 inches shorter than average cats – that’s a lot!
  • It will come as no surprise that a Munchkin holds the record for the shortest living cat.
  • They are a fairly new breed, only really being introduced to the scene in 1991.
  • They really are named after the small characters from the Wizard of Oz!
  • They are one of the most playful breeds, even long into adulthood.

Care and Maintenance

With rare and exotic breeds there is often the concern that there will be a lot of care or maintenance required. This is not the case with Munchkins, they are incredibly easy to look after.

One of the biggest chores with cats is helping longhaired breeds keep their coats in good shape. Munchkins have short fur, and they don’t go outside – or at least not exploring and jumping around.

You’ll only need to brush them once a week or so. The same as you would any shorthaired breed.

I have read some accounts that some people think they might suffer from similar back issues to sausage dogs. But I’m yet to see actual evidence of this.

The only real maintenance you need to know about is keeping your Munchkin entertained. They love playing and interacting with humans.

Playing with cats is such a rewarding thing as an owner, it’s not like this is a downside or anything!

Do Munchkins Make Good Family Pets?

Whether you’ve never owned a cat before or you’ve had many, you’ve nothing to worry about. Munchkins are awesome pets that get along with people and other animals.

They’re curious, fun, cute, and love exploring – without being able to get to all those hard to reach spots other cats can get to.

Munchkins have a lot of love to give if you enjoy petting and having a lap cat. They are also very playful too, so you’ll have endless hours of fun playing with them.

All they need is good food, plenty of interaction, a nice perch in the window, and you’ll have a best friend for life.
