If you cannot find available kittens or what you’re looking for from the above breeders, you could consider adopting a Munchkin cat from a shelter or a rescue.
Adopting a cat is a satisfying thing to do. It gives a cat another opportunity to live out their life with a loving family, as opposed to staying in a shelter indefinitely.
If you’re interested in adopting, there are no guarantees you’ll find what you’re looking for but it’s worth taking a look.

If you want some added reassurance that the breeder you’re dealing with is a reputable breeder with pedigree cats, then you could look for TICA and CFA certifications.
The International Cat Association (TICA) is the largest genetic registry of pedigreed cats in the world. If a breeder has a TICA certificate for their cats, you know they’ve been registered.
The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) is a not-for-profit organization that holds shows and judges cats using CFA Breed Standards. There have been more than 2 million cats registered with the CFA over the years.
If a breeder is registered with either of these organizations, it shows they are committed to maintaining a high standard of welfare and understands the breed.
Average Cost of a Munchkin Kitten
Munchkins are fairly popular in some parts of the world, like Japan. However, in the U.S. they’re still fairly rare and seen as an exotic breed.
Therefore, they are fairly expensive. It’s hard to say how much you’ll pay, as there are a few things that can affect the price a lot. Such as pedigree, markings, colors, etc.
Generally speaking, however, you can expect to pay around $800-$2,000. But don’t be surprised to see a much higher price tag for rarer colors.

Some breeders will sell older Munchkins, or you may be able to find one in need of a new home. They will typically cost less than a newborn kitten.

Here are some facts about this breed that you may not have been aware of:
- It should come as no surprise that a Munchkin holds the record for the shortest cat – which was measured at just 13.34cm tall.
- They are one of the newer cat breeds to be officially recognized, appearing in 1991.
- Munchkins are extremely playful and will behave like kittens long into adulthood.
- Their legs are around 3 inches shorter than average cats.
- If you’ve seen The Wizard of Oz; Munchkins really are named after the small characters from that film/book.
Caring for Your Munchkin
Munchkins are super easy to care for. The fact that they don’t go outside or need to get as much exercise as ‘regular’ cats is a bonus for busy owners that do not have a lot of time.
This doesn’t mean you can neglect them though! Munchkins love playing. In fact, it’s said they retain their playful, kitten-like characteristics longer than a typical cat.
So, it’s ideal if you can make time to play with them. Also, some cat furniture like a tree, or some small obstacles will increase their happiness and give them something to do when you’re not around.
Just remember to get furniture that caters to their small legs! Munchkins are nowhere as agile, or adept at climbing as other breeds.
All you really need to do is brush them once a week or so, provide quality food and fresh water, and you’ll have a happy little Munchkin on your hands.

Whether you’ve never owned a cat before or you’ve had many, you’ve nothing to worry about. Munchkins are awesome pets that get along with people and other animals.
They’re curious, fun, cute, and love exploring – without being able to get to all those hard-to-reach spots other cats can get to.
Munchkins have a lot of love to give if you enjoy petting and having a lap cat, they’re often found on the laps of their owners enjoying that fussing.
They are also very playful too, retaining those kitten-like playing attributes long into adulthood. So, you and others in your family will have endless hours of fun playing with them.
All they need is good food, plenty of interaction, a nice perch in the window, and you’ll have a best friend for life.
