Adopting a Munchkin in Missouri

If you were not able to find what you were looking for or any expected litters from the above breeders, you could consider adopting a Munchkin.

Adopting a cat from a shelter or a rescue is always a satisfying thing to do. It means you’re giving a cat another chance at living in a home with a loving family.

If you’re considering it or interested to learn more, here are a couple of places to look:

Both of these sites are large databases that connect you with thousands of cat rescues and shelters across the U.S.

TICA and CFA Certifications

You may have seen some breeders saying they are TICA and CFA certified. This is an extra stamp of approval that they registered their cats and are maintaining a high standard.

Here’s what these organizations mean:

The International Cat Association (TICA) is an organization that was founded in 1967 with the primary purpose of upholding high standards of breeding for cats.

They require extensive education from their members and are involved in various activities such as showing, judging, and organizing World Championships.

The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) is the world’s premier cat organization and the largest registry and show organization for pedigreed cats.

The CFA recognizes five long hair & six shorthair breeds of cats as well as three types of longhaired kittens. Only registered purebred cats are allowed to participate in any CFA show or event.

What’s the Average Cost of a Munchkin Cat?

Interesting and Fun Facts About Munchkin Cats

Let’s state the obvious here – Munchkin cats are unique and interesting felines!

Here are some facts about this breed that you may not have been aware of:

  • It should come as no surprise that a Munchkin holds the record for the shortest cat – which was measured at just 13.34cm tall.
  • They are one of the newer cat breeds to be officially recognized, appearing in 1991.
  • Munchkins are extremely playful and will behave like kittens long into adulthood.
  • Their legs are around 3 inches shorter than average cats.
  • If you’ve seen The Wizard of Oz; Munchkins really are named after the small characters from that film/book.

Munchkin Care and Maintenance

Despite their unusual appearance, Munchkins are a low-maintenance and easy to care for breed of cat.

Their indoor cats and most have short coats, so you should only have to brush them once a week or so to help keep their coats in top condition.

With their small legs and reduced agility, you’ll notice there are a lot fewer places they can get to as well. When buying or making cat furniture, take this into account.

The only thing I’ll point out on the care side is that Munchkins are quite demanding on the playing and attention front. They love interacting with people and playing, and it’s so much fun I don’t see that as a downside.

Are Munchkins Good Family Pets?

They are good family pets, yes!

I might be a bit biased of course, but I can’t really name any downsides to owning a Munchkin.

Obviously, each Munchkin has its own personality that you will need to discover. But generally speaking, Munchkins are social cats, they are fine with children and other animals, and will take advantage of all of that attention.

They love playing, too. They tend to be more playful than most breeds long into adulthood. It’s also hard to forget sometimes that they’re growing up, with their short legs and small appearance.

You’ll notice they’re very different from other cats, there’s no mistaking that. They are a lot less agile and won’t be getting themselves into the kinds of annoying predicaments most kittens do.

On the plus side, this means not hanging off of curtains, jumping on the kitchen sides, hiding in odd high up places, and so on. So, it’s not all bad!

It’s not without good reason that Munchkin cat owners are some of the proudest cat owners. Just talk to anyone who has or currently owns a Munchkin and you’ll see what I mean!
