If you’ve never been to a cat cafe, you’ve been missing out. There is nothing quite like enjoying a coffee while being surrounded by free-roaming cats.
At the time of writing this, there was just one cat cafe in New Mexico. Here are the contact details, I hope it’s near to you!

Catopia Cat Café is the only cat cafe currently open in the state of New Mexico – the good is that it’s an excellent cat cafe!
Their mission is, “to provide a happy temporary home for adoptable cats that is also an awesome place for people to relax and have fun.”
They do both walk-ins and appointments. I recommend booking a time slot, cat cafes can’t let a lot of people in at once, so it’s better to know you have a slot than have to walk away.
All of their cats are adoptable. Catopia Cat Café work with Albuquerque Animal Welfare, Bernalillo County Animal Care Center, and other rescue group partners to give at-risk cats a new home – and hopefully a new forever home with you.
The bottom line is, if you’re in New Mexico and love cats, you’re going to have an awesome time.
If you’re not so sure about the cat lover part, it’s still well worth doing something different and dropping in at Catopia Cat Café to experience coffee and cat cuddles!
What to Expect at a Cat Cafe
Every cat cafe is going to be slightly different and have its own rules. If you’ve never been to a cat cafe, however, I can help prepare you.
First of all, you should always check out their website for the latest news and info. You’ll also have to book a time slot, and might have to sign a waiver.
It’s important you know what a cafe’s rules are, as these are in place for the safety and wellbeing of the cat – and for you, of course.
As for when you’re at a cat cafe, you can expect to drink good coffee (or whatever drink you prefer), and nibble on some food as you would at any cafe.
The most obvious difference being that cats are roaming around the cafe!
Most cafe cats are from rescues and will have been selected because they are social and love human interaction.
How much interaction you get will depend on the cats at the cafe, but one thing I can guarantee about visiting a cat cafe – it’s a unique and fun experience!
How Cat Cafes Help At-Risk Cats
There is often the misconception that cat cafes are created for the entertainment of customers. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Every cat cafe I’ve reviewed found all of their cats at local rescues and used the cat cafe as an adoption center more than a profit-making business.
In addition to giving homeless cats a new home and an interactive lounge, cat cafes typically also put all of their cats up for adoption.
So, it’s more accurate to look at a cat cafe as a pet adoption business with the cafe aspect to get more customers through the door than it is a cafe with cats (if that makes sense).
If you want to do your part for homeless cats in your state, visiting a cat cafe is the best thing you can do.
You don’t have to be able to adopt one of their cats, any money you spend is going to go towards a good cause.
Plus, you get to hang out with cats, have good coffee and food, and enjoy a unique experience – it’s a win-win.
