The first and the only (at the time of publishing) cat cafe in Iowa is Coffee Cats Cafe. Here you’ll find the true definition of a cat cafe, “a combination of a coffee shop and a cat lounge.”

All of their cats are rescues from the  Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) and are available for adoption. They typically have around 10-12 cats at any one time.

First Time at a Cat Cafe? What to Expect!

If you’ve never been to a cat cafe before, I can give you a good idea of what to expect.

Each cafe is going to be different, of course, but you can expect a combination of a cafe plus a cat adoption center for the most part.

Most cat cafes are run by cat-lovers and have a mission to help the local homeless cat population.

A lot of cat cafes take in cats from local rescues and shelters and give them a new home in their cafe. They also make their cats available for adoption for customers.

They are essentially operating as pet adoption centers and using food and drink as a way for people to come and spend some time with the cats.

Don’t let this put you off if you’re just a casual visitor though. Any donations are going to help the cafe with its mission, and ultimately help rehome at-risk cats.

Something important to keep in mind is that you will most likely have to book a time slot to visit.

Cat cafes have strict rules on how many customers can visit at a time to ensure their cats aren’t stressed by the number of people coming and going.

You will also likely see some rules on their website. Make sure you read these and are fully aware of how you need to behave and the dos and don’ts when visiting!

Where Do Cats Come From in Cat Cafes?

More often than not, the cats in cat cafes come from local rescues and shelters.

Cat cafes typically partner up with shelters to effectively raise awareness for at-risk cats by giving them a place to live where they’ll get lots of attention and hopefully be adopted.

If you check the website for a cat cafe, they should provide all the details regarding where their cats are coming from as well as how you can adopt one.

This is why cat cafes are ethical businesses. The cats are not there purely for the amusement of customers, the owners are trying to give them a better life.

At the very least, the cats get out of the shelter and into a better environment – and you as a customer get a fun experience meeting cats.
