Choosing a Breeder or Cattery
Buying a kitten from an ethical and professional breeder is essential if you’re to get off on the right foot with a healthy kitten.
For this reason, it’s important you do some due diligence and lead with your head rather than your heart.
A few tips to help you find the right breeder for you:
Ask plenty of questions – have as much dialogue as you can – without taking up too much of their time.
The better you get to know the breeder and how they respond, the more you’ll know about how they operate.
See if you can visit their home – Due to covid, it’s not always possible to visit a breeder’s home before committing to a kitten.
They should let you visit the kitten and meet the parents, or at least see them via facetime before you pick them up though.
Look at their contract – Any reputable breeder will ask you to fill out a questionnaire before agreeing to sell you a kitten. They will also have a contract for you to sign.
Again, don’t get carried away when seeing a cute kitten without reading all the paperwork so you know what you’re committing to.
How Much Does Sphynx Cat Cost?
Prices of Sphynx cats – and most exotic and rare breeds – vary a fair amount depending on how well-bred the Sphynx is, the type, breeder costs, and some other factors.
I looked at a bunch of established breeders for quotes, generally speaking, prices range from $1,500-$4,000.
This can of course go up several thousand more for specific cross breeds like Bambinos, Bambobs, Minskins, and so on.
You should also be aware that it’s normal to be asked to put down a non-refundable deposit.
This is to cover the costs involved in raising the kitten before you take it home. As well as safeguarding the breeder if you change your mind.
Do Sphynx Cats Make Good Family Pets?
Despite being fairly rare, Sphynx cats actually make excellent family pets.
They are known for having extroverted personalities – and this is one of their best features. They’re curious, (a little mischievous at times), loving, and very social.
In fact, the busier your family home, the happier a Sphynx is likely to be.
To address the most obvious characteristic of a Sphynx – they have no fur. This means they do have some different care needs from other cats.
They’re not outdoor cats, let’s get that straight. Sphynx’s have delicate skin and are prone to sunburn, just as they will easily get too cold and do not appreciate a cold wind chill.
You’ll notice they spend time where they can get some warmth around the home. If you can’t keep your home somewhere around 70 degrees F (21 C), then you may need to put some clothes on them.
It’s certainly not uncommon to see a Sphynx snuggled up in blankets or wearing a sweater in the winter months – and who can blame them, they’re essentially naked!
If you have any doubts, questions, or concerns, you should always make a note of them and ask the breeder you’re purchasing a kitten from what they advise.
Please keep in mind that any breed characteristics are general. Every cat has its own unique personality – that’s one of the things that’s so lovable about cats!
