Some Tips When Choosing a Sphynx Breeder or Cattery

Looking for a Sphynx – or any pet for that matter – is an exciting time, but it can also feel a bit daunting.

As with anything, it helps to be prepared and to know what to expect.

I can’t tell you exactly what to expect as each breeder will handle things slightly differently. To help, here are some questions I suggest asking a breeder you want to adopt a from:

When will you be able to take the kitten home? – this is the most important question, right? You want to circle a day in the calendar when you’ll be bringing your new kitten home.

Generally speaking, kittens are at least 14 weeks old before they are removed from their mothers.

What vaccinations will the kitten have? – by 14 weeks of age, the kitten will probably have been vaccinated twice against various diseases.

It’s very important, however, that you know exactly what vaccinations it had and if there are any further vaccinations you will need to give them.

When will you get the paperwork? – the last thing most new kitten owners are thinking about is contracts and paperwork.

Contracts and legal rights are important though, and you will also need to know how to register your Sphynx as a pedigree.

How Much Do Sphynx Cats Cost?

The cost of a pedigree, exotic, and rare cats typically varies a lot based on the pedigree, characteristics, and so on.

To give you a general idea though, I looked at the prices listed by several catteries. It looks like Sphynx cats are almost always in the $1,500-$4,000 range.

Cats on the more expensive end tend to be well-bred or crossbreeds like Minskins and Bambinos (these are crosses between a Sphynx and the short-legged Munchkin!)

Two things to be aware of when buying pedigree cats; the first is to make sure you know the exact total cost before signing on the dotted line.

The other is that you’ll have to put down a large non-refundable deposit. Breeders have to cover the costs of raising your kitten for the first 14 or so weeks, so this is understandable!

Are Sphynx Cats Good Family Pets?

In a word – yes!

Sphynx are excellent family pets, and I’m not just saying that because you’re looking for one.

They’re super friendly and social, which of course means they’re going to fit into households well as long as they’re properly socialized.

They do enjoy human interaction and love to be petted. It takes a little getting used to stroking bare skin and not a soft, fluffy coat, but you get used to it quickly.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Sphynx are, well, naked. So, if you don’t keep your home nice and warm, you’re going to need to provide plenty of blankets – and a lot of owners even put them in a sweater.

If you have any questions or concerns about how a Sphynx will fit into your home, you should always discuss it with a breeder you’re interested in working with.

Please keep in mind that any breed characteristics are general. Every cat has its own unique personality – that’s one of the things that’s so lovable about cats!
