Tips for Choosing a Breeder or Cattery

Finding a new kitten is a big deal – and it’s an even bigger deal when you have your options limited because you’re looking at rare breeds like Sphynx.

Is important you do your due diligence before committing to a breeder.

A couple of things I recommend is to first check but they’re registered with either The International Cat Association (TICA) or The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA).

Being part of either of these organizations demonstrates they are committed to ethical breeding and register all of their kittens. Although it’s not mandatory.

You should always ask plenty of questions, too. I recommend asking things like:

Can I visit the cattery? – this is not always possible, especially due to restrictions imposed by the pandemic.

But you should be able to visit your kitten at least once before taking it home. Or the breeder will arrange some facetime sessions.

Can I see the contract? – paperwork is usually the last thing on someone’s mind, but it’s very important that you know what you’re committing to.

Most breeders will ask you to fill out a questionnaire before considering you as a customer. Then there will be a contract as per the terms of the arrangement.

What diseases are covered/vaccinations given? – you also want to make sure you know which vaccinations the breeder is going to give your kitten, and which you’re responsible for.

It’s also a good time to ask them for advice on caring for your new kitten. There’s really no better person to ask than an experienced breeder.

Essentially, the most important thing when looking for a new kitten is that you think with your head and not get carried away with your heart when you see a cute kitten – and Sphynx kittens are super cute!

How Much Does Sphynx Cat Cost?

Prices of Sphynx cats – and most exotic and rare breeds – vary a fair amount depending on how well-bred the Sphynx is, the type, breeder costs, and some other factors.

I looked at a bunch of established breeders for quotes, generally speaking, prices range from $1,500-$4,000.

This can of course go up several thousand more for specific cross breeds like Bambinos, Bambobs, Minskins, and so on.

You should also be aware that it’s normal to be asked to put down a non-refundable deposit.

This is to cover the costs involved in raising the kitten before you take it home. As well as safeguarding the breeder if you change your mind.

Are Sphynxes Good Family Pets?

You’re certainly going to turn heads when you have a Sphynx as a family pet!

It’s a Sphynx’s lack of fur that they’re known for. But they’re also great family pets and a load of fun to have around the home.

Sphynx are curious, playful, friendly, and social. If you’re looking for a cat to play with, hang out with, and see around the home, then a Sphynx is the right choice.

You do have to remember that they’re essentially naked, so they are prone to feeling the chill.

Some owners dress up their Sphynx with a sweater or other kitty clothes. They take to it really well if you dress them from an early age.

They’re equally at risk of sunburn without fur to protect them, so if you have an outdoor space for your Sphynx please be aware of the risks.

If you have any questions specific to your home or situation and how a Sphynx will fit in, you should always raise these questions with a breeder that you want to work with.

Please keep in mind that any breed characteristics are general. Every cat has its own unique personality – that’s one of the things that’s so lovable about cats!
