Tips for Choosing a Breeder or Cattery to Adopt From
It’s a huge decision and lifestyle choice to adopt a new kitten and it’s an even bigger deal when you’re paying a lot of money for a rare breed like a Sphynx.
Therefore it’s important you do your due diligence when considering a breeder to ensure you get a healthy kitten.
The first thing to check is that the breeder is registered with either The International Cat Association (TICA) or The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA).
It’s not a deal-breaker if they’re not, but these two organizations are dedicated to preserving rare breeds and helping breeders to operate ethically.
When you’ve found a breeder near you you’re happy to work with, some of the questions I recommend asking at a minimum are:
Can you visit your kitten? – You will want to visit your kitten, that’s normal. With all the lockdown restrictions and other covid-related issues, it’s not always possible.
Any breeder should be willing to do some live facetime sessions, or Skype, Zoom, whatever is your preferred method at the very least.
Questionnaires and contracts – Buying a Sphynx is expensive, and good breeders always want to see their kittens go to good homes.
You will likely be asked to fill out a questionnaire before you can be considered for adopting a kitten.
There will also be a contract detailing all the important terms and conditions of the deal. Read all the documents carefully.
Vaccinations – Check which vaccinations the breeder will be giving your kitten, and which you’re responsible for.
I’m sure this is something they would cover, but the sooner you talk about it the better. Vaccinations are important to the health of kittens, make sure you know where you stand.
How Much Does Sphynx Cat Cost?
Sphynxes are expensive, but I bet you’ll not find someone who doesn’t say they are worth every penny!
The cost can vary a lot depending on where you’re located, the demand, the characteristics and specifics of the cat, and loads of other factors.
Give you a general idea, however, I took a look at a bunch of Sphynx breeder’s prices. Most cats were in the $1,500-$4,000 range.
Remember, try not to get carried away without going over the contract and costs.
Make sure you know exactly how much you’re paying in total. It’s normal to be asked for a large non-refundable deposit, too, so keep that in mind.
Are Sphynx Cats Good Family Pets?
Let’s be honest, the main reason most of us get a Sphynx is that their hairless appearance is so unique.
You’ll also be happy to hear that they’re more than just naked cats, they’re actually awesome family pets.
Sphynxes have very strong outgoing, friendly, and social personalities. They love being around people and are fine if you have young kids and other pets.
They can be quite vocal, so expect a greeting when you come home or if it’s feeding time. But I wouldn’t exactly put them in the ‘noisy’ category.
You do have to take into account that they do not have a nice warm coat on like other cats – they really are basically naked.
I’m not sure you would want to let your Sphynx outdoors, not many people do. But they certainly are not outdoor cats anyway.
They’re prone to sunburn in the summer, and easily get too cold in the winter. A happy medium is a nice warm home and plenty of warm spots to sleep and blankets.
Some owners even put them in clothes. If you get your Sphynx used to this from an early age they tend to take to it really well.
So, if you’re looking for a curious and fun cat to add to your home – who just happens to be hairless – then a Sphynx is a perfect choice.
