Questions to Ask a Sphynx Breeder/Cattery
Looking for the perfect Sphynx kitten is a little nerve-racking – but loads of fun.
You want everything to be perfect, I get it. The golden rule is – the better prepared you are, the better your experience will be.
When you find a breeder near you, you should always do some due diligence to ensure they have a good reputation. Then ask loads of questions and get to know them.
Not only will this help put you at ease, but it’s also a great way to make sure you know exactly what to expect from the moment you agree to adopt a kitten.
Some of the most important questions to consider asking are:
When do you get the kitten? – You need a date to look forward to preparing for, right?
Breeders typically allow kittens to go to new homes after 14 weeks, but it’s something you need to check.
How often will you get updates? – Knowing you have a kitten that’s all yours developing every day is exciting, and it’s sad to miss out on it.
Ask how many visits you’ll be allowed. Which typically isn’t many with the restrictions the pandemic has enforced.
Most breeders will be willing to provide plenty of video that photo updates though. It’s definitely something you want to ask up front.
What do you have to do after you take the kitten home? – Even if this isn’t your first kitten, it’s important to ask the breeder what you should be doing in the days and weeks after you take the kitten home.
There will likely still be some vaccinations they need, and they will give you some care instructions.
Regardless of what you read online, keep in mind that you’re buying from a breeder specializing in Sphynxes. I’m sure they’ll have some awesome advice.
Can you see the contract and papers? – Pedigree cats come with papers detailing the cat’s parents, history, and so that you can register them with either The International Cat Association (TICA) or The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA).
You will also get a contract to sign. It’s important you read this document carefully to ensure you are covered in case anything goes wrong.
How Much Do Sphynx Cats Cost?
The cost of a pedigree, exotic, and rare cats typically varies a lot based on the pedigree, characteristics, and so on.
To give you a general idea though, I looked at the prices listed by several catteries. It looks like Sphynx cats are almost always in the $1,500-$4,000 range.
Cats on the more expensive end tend to be well-bred or crossbreeds like Minskins and Bambinos (these are crosses between a Sphynx and the short-legged Munchkin!)
Two things to be aware of when buying pedigree cats; the first is to make sure you know the exact total cost before signing on the dotted line.
The other is that you’ll have to put down a large non-refundable deposit. Breeders have to cover the costs of raising your kitten for the first 14 or so weeks, so this is understandable!
Are Sphynxes Good Family Pets?
You’re certainly going to turn heads when you have a Sphynx as a family pet!
It’s a Sphynx’s lack of fur that they’re known for. But they’re also great family pets and a load of fun to have around the home.
Sphynx are curious, playful, friendly, and social. If you’re looking for a cat to play with, hang out with, and see around the home, then a Sphynx is the right choice.
You do have to remember that they’re essentially naked, so they are prone to feeling the chill.
Some owners dress up their Sphynx with a sweater or other kitty clothes. They take to it really well if you dress them from an early age.
They’re equally at risk of sunburn without fur to protect them, so if you have an outdoor space for your Sphynx please be aware of the risks.
