What Is the Personality of a Sphynx Cat?
Obviously, Sphynx cats are famous for how they look. But if you’re going to bring one into your home you are going to need to know what their personality and are typically like.
I say typically because cats are individuals. So do keep in mind that results may vary!
With that said, Sphynx cats are known for being energetic, agile, and adventurous. They are also very social, so be prepared to pay a lot of attention to them, especially while they are growing up.
They are likely to follow you around and keep you busy. If you’re looking for a silent little friend that sits on your lap now and then, that’s not a Sphynx.
How Much Do Sphynx Kittens Cost?
Depending on the pedigree of the Sphynx you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,200 up to several thousand dollars.
For some other breeds, such as the Bambino which is a cross between a Sphynx and a Munchkin, and the Elf where is a cross between a Sphynx and an American Curl, you can expect to pay more.
The color of a Sphynx also affects the price. When speaking with one breeder, they told me black and black spotted are rare and therefore in more demand and can add an extra $500-$1,000 to the price tag.
How Much Do Sphynx Cats Cost?
Depending on the age, markings, breed, and pedigree of the cat an adult will typically cost a little less than a similar kitten.
Why Are Sphynx Cats so Expensive?
This is the first question that usually crops up when someone starts calling Sphynx breeders. They are expensive cats. While any owner will tell you they are of course worth every penny, it helps to know why.
The main reasons are that they are a lot of costs that go into breeding a Sphynx, namely:
- Testing the father and mother cats for a range of diseases and conditions
- Logging the blood group of the cat
- Detailing the family tree and putting together the paperwork
- Housing and feeding costs
- Getting the paperwork from governing bodies like The Cat Fancy Association (CFA), and The International Cat Association (TICA)
- Microchipping
- Any additional tests (carried out by a vet)
- Producing legal contracts
Are Sphynx Cats Hard to Take Care Of?
A Sphynx isn’t hard to take care of, no. There is a little more involved than a regular tabby, however. After all, this is a rare, pedigree, hairless cat.
They do require baths at least once a week. Which may seem like a lot of effort if you’ve never bathed a cat before. It’s not too bad though, they are easy to handle and once they are used to being bathed it only takes a few minutes.
You can look at this another way. At least you don’t have to brush them and deal with all that loose fur. That’s one of the reasons some people actually choose a Sphynx.
It’s worth mentioning that they are not listed as hypoallergenic though. Most people are not aware of this, but it’s actually proteins in the skin, urine, and saliva that cause allergies, not cat fur.
Apart from that, they are generally healthy and strong cats. They might get themselves into the odd sticky situation due to their overly curious nature, but there aren’t any other concerns around caring for and looking after a Sphynx.
Do Sphynx Cats Make Good Pets?
Yes! Sphynx make great family pets. They are social and lovable cats, so they are very comfortable being introduced to a busy home with kids and other animals.
Even though they look a little fragile, at least I think they do. It’s more so to do with them not having any hair and looking naked and vulnerable I think.
They are actually very strong and agile cats. They might pick up a few more scratches than a cat with long fur, which isn’t surprising as they don’t have all that fury protection.
