What TICA and CFA Certifications Mean
Trusting a breeder to provide you with the perfect kitten is a big deal. In my experience, there are very few bad breeders, but there are some ways you can safeguard yourself.
A lot of breeders elect to be TICA or CFA certified. This means they are registering their cats, along with adhering to strong ethical codes of practice.
Here is a brief overview of what being a member of these organizations means:
TICA (The International Cat Association) – Founded in 1979, TICA is the world’s largest genetic registry of pedigreed cats.
You’ll see a lot of breeders displaying their logo. This shows their cattery has been approved and they are registering their cats.
CFA (The Cat Fanciers’ Association) – The CFA was founded in 1906 and is the oldest and largest North American registry for pedigree cats.
They provide a lot of information about running a cattery and breeding pedigree cats. You’ll see a lot of breeders proudly displaying their affiliation with the CFA.
How Much Are Siberian Cats?
It’s hard to give you a price on what you can expect to pay as there are so many factors that affect the price of pedigree cats.
As a general rule of thumb, however, you’re likely to be paying in the ballpark of $1,500-$4,000.
This is why it’s often a good idea to call more than one breeder and discuss exactly what you want from your kitten as you might find the price varies.
Additional Resources for Siberian Cat Owners
It’s hard to bring a Siberian into your home without being fascinated by these magnificent Russian creatures.
So, I thought I’d share some additional resources that might come in handy if you want to meet other Siberian owners online:
Siberian cats on Reddit – Reddit has one of the largest online communities for everything from people who love pancakes to Siberian owners.
If you want to share pictures of your new kitty, or maybe find out more about what it’s like living with a Siberian – you should drop into this subreddit.
Adoptapet.com – I thought I’d include a link to Adoptapet, just in case you can’t find a new kitten or an expected litter from a breeder near you.
Adoptapet is one of the largest online resources that connect shelters, catteries, and rescues across the U.S. with cats needing homes.
You never know, you might find a Siberian in need of a new home you simply can’t pass on. It’ll be a lot less expensive, too.
Are Siberians Really Hypoallergenic Cats?
Siberian cats are often marketed as hypoallergenic and perfect for people with allergies – and this is true.
When someone is allergic to cats, it’s because cats produce an allergen called FelD1. This allergen becomes airborne when cats groom themselves and they create dander.
Siberians produce a much lower amount of FelD1 compared with other breeds, this is what makes them ‘hypoallergenic’.
Some people who are allergic to cats do not experience any allergic reactions living with Siberians at all.
It’s still possible to have a reaction though and depends on the individual. Some breeders specialize in Siberians that have very low FelD1, if you suffer from allergies you should discuss this before making a decision.
How Long Do Siberian Cats Live For?
The average lifespan of a Siberian is in the 10-12 years range. It’s not unheard of for them to live up to the ripe old age of 18 years though.
Are Siberian Cats Good Family Pets?
Being the national cat of Russia, it’s understandable that a lot of people think Siberians might have some special requirements.
This couldn’t be further from the truth. Siberians are easy to care for, fit in with households of any size, and are great family pets.
The only considerations or things that you really need to take into account is that Siberians are big cats, and they enjoy lots of attention.
I would say the only family homes that they are not ideal for, are homes where everyone is out during the day.
Siberians have magnificent coats and do need brushing on a regular basis. But this is more fun than it is a chore.
If you’re looking for an intelligent, personable, and affectionate cat – a Siberian (or two) might be perfect for you.
