Additional Resources
There aren’t a lot of registered breeders that I was able to find located in the state of Texas. If you’re still looking for an Abyssinian, I recommend looking on the Adopt a Pet website.
At the time of writing this, there were a few available being held at shelters. Obviously, this is subject to change, so you’ll have to check and keep an eye out yourself.
Giving a cat a new home is one of the best and more rewarding things you can do though, I totally recommend it.
I’ve done it myself a few times over the years.,Taking a cat from a shelter and giving them a home is a magical experience, and it’s obviously a new lease of life for them.
Are Abyssinian Cats Good Pets?
Yes, Abyssinians are great pets and will integrate into a busy or quiet household just perfectly.
They are one of the more intelligent and curious cat breeds. So, don’t expect a lap cat that is going to laze around watching TV with you every night.
Abyssinians are much more interested in playing, interacting with you, and investing things around the home.
Some might say I’m just finding a polite way to say they’re mischievous! (Nothing wrong with that)
A large cat tree is a must. They are strong, agile cats and will benefit from having some of their own furniture – as will you when you see them shredding it up and you’re thankful it’s not your favorite chair!
I’d say they are definitely more suited to a busy and active household. They benefit from having people that have time to pay them some attention, and they enjoy other pets too.
Another plus for some people is that they’re not a vocal or noisy breed. They have an almost “bell-like” voice, and although they will communicate with you when needed, they don’t make a lot of noise.
How Much Do Abyssinian Kittens Cost?
If you’re buying a pure breed Abyssinian from a reputable breeder, you can expect to pay around $750-$1,300.
The price of an Aby – and this is true for a lot of rare and exotic breeds – does vary a lot though. This is due to a number of factors, such as availability, the color you’re after, etc.
The best advice is to make inquiries as far in advance as possible as you might have to wait for a litter.
How Much Do Abyssinian Cats Cost?
There are two ways you can adopt an adult Abyssinian cat;
- From a breeder, or
- From a shelter/rescue
Sometimes breeders will have adult cats for sale and you can still expect to pay a premium. I made some inquiries, but at the time of writing this, I couldn’t find any for sale.
I could find some in need of rehoming on adoption sites, however. This is the most inexpensive way to get an Abyssinian, some shelters ask for a small fee ($50-$100) to cover their costs.
