Allergies! Anyone who suffers from allergies knows how frustrating the struggle is with everyday products can be.
I have sinusitis, so I understand. I’ve had to switch up a few products around the home to keep runny eyes, nose, and all those other irritating problems to a minimum.
One thing that made a huge difference for me last year was changing the cat litter I was using to a hypoallergenic litter.
After doing some research (trying different products until I noticed a big enough improvement) I found the perfect litter for me, my cat, and my home – as I will explain below.
In this article, I’ve put together a roundup of 5 of the best hypoallergenic cat litter brands to give you some choice if you’re looking to switch up the litter you’re using to lessen your allergies.

Hypoallergenic Cat Litter Brands: 5 of the Best Picks
Dr Elsey’s Cat Litter – Ultra Premium Clumping Litter
Dr Elsey’s is probably the most well-known and highly respected brand of hypoallergenic cat litter among cat owners.
It’s become my litter of choice, and I can say without bias that it’s the best litter I’ve ever used.
They say it’s 99.9% dust-free, and I have to agree. No tracking issues with little paw prints leading away from the tray, and none of those terrible dust clouds that clay-based litters create – which of course set off allergies.
If it’s within your budget this should be your hypoallergenic litter of choice in my opinion. Can’t fault it, just hop over to Amazon via the link below to read customer feedback and check the price if you’re interested.

Boxiecat Premium Clumping Hypoallergenic Cat Litter
If accolades and awards mean a lot to you then this Boxiecat Premium Hypoallergenic Litter is probably the one you’re looking for.
Winner of the Cat Fancy Editors’ Choice Award, recommended by veterinarians, and most importantly recommended by a lot of happy cat owners – this litter has it all on paper.
The good news is that I’ve tried it too. I was most impressed by the way it clumps waste. It seals up urine and poop in a hard clump making it very easy to scoop.
No complaints on the other areas that a good litter should deliver on. It’s odorless, seals in odors, has a nice fine consistency that is just as good on sensitive paws, and all around awesome.

Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light Hypoallergenic Multi-Cat Litter
This litter from Cat’s Pride has been around for a long time and is one of the best hypoallergenic brands of cat litter.
They put a lot of emphasis on it being lightweight, claiming it’s 50% lighter than other litters. I’m not questioning them when I say, ”claiming.” I just haven’t done a weigh-off against another litter.
As with all the hypoallergenic litters on this list, it’s virtually dust-free. I think as litter buying cat owners we’ve come to expect nothing less to be honest.
Another awesome hypoallergenic option if you’re looking for a litter that’s not going to aggravate you or your cat’s allergies.
Possibly a choice for someone looking for the lightest option. Worth a closer look either way, feel free to check out the latest price and reviews over at Amazon.

okocat Natural Wood Hypoallergenic Cat Litter
okocat are one of the market leaders for premium cat litters. They have products tailored to multi-cat households, clumping, long hair breeds, and more. The one constant factor is that all their litters are natural, hypoallergenic, and biodegradable.
Their litter is actually made from reclaimed fallen timber. That’s how environmentally minded okocat are as a company, I think it’s a really cool thing to do and a noble reason to support them.
But, how good is the litter? Because that’s what really matters, right?
It’s excellent, seriously. It clumps as well as any litter, it’s naturally lightweight, super absorbent (up to 500% its own weight!), and keeps odors locked up.
It’s really soft and one of the litters I recommend for cats with sensitive paws or if they’ve been declawed. Plus, it’s flushable too, which is something I subscribe to as I have a box in the bathroom.
A great hypoallergenic litter choice, give a try and see what you think. Or maybe you’ve tried this litter and have some feedback to help others?

Arm & Hammer Naturals Hypoallergenic Multi-Cat Litter
I covered Arm & Hammers Clump and Seal here as one of the best dust-free litters on the market. Their Naturals Clumping Litter is dust-free too, keeping allergy triggers to a minimum.
Arm & Hammer use a unique formula that includes their baking soda in their litters. The result is a powerful odor controlling, clumping, easy to use product, that cats also love in my experience.
Naturals is formulated with natural corn and plant extracts. This means that not only is it more environmentally friendly than clay-based litters, but it’s also more effective at clumping and sealing in those horrible odors. It’s a win-win.
It’s formulated for multi-cat households. I’ve spoken with a friend who has 6 cats that uses Naturals and she says she wouldn’t use anything else.
If you’re looking for a hypoallergenic cat litter for multiple cats, this Arm & Hammer Naturals gets the nod from me.

Am I Allergic to Cat Litter?
According to a study carried out by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (source), allergies are the #2 reason why cat owners give up their pets. This breaks my heart.
I’m sure there are some extreme cases. But, for the most part, there is a lot you can do to live happily with a cat even if you have allergies.
For one, it might just be the cat litter you’re using that’s causing your allergies to flare up. So this is something to look into.
Most of the generic or cheaper litters on the market are clay-based. These contain a number of by-products that are known to aggravate allergies, such as silica dust.
So, while I can’t tell you for sure if you’re allergic to the cat litter you’re using. If you’re using a clay-based litter I suggest changing it for one of the products listed above.
You’ll soon know if it was the litter causing you a problem. And, at the very least you’re now using a product that’s better for the environment, and more importantly your cat.
Not to mention they are also easier to use and all around better litters than clay ones. Scooping is made easier, they control odors better, create less dust and tracking, and cat’s like them more.
Which Is the Best Hypoallergenic Cat Litter?
I pointed out some of the pros and cons of each of the brands above that should help you identify which brand is best for you and your cats without having to try them.
It’s not an exact science, but I recommend the following brands for the following requirements:
Multi-cat households – Arm & Hammer Naturals or Dr Elsey’s cat litters.
Sensitive paws/fussy cats – okocat Natural Wood or Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light.
Best performing – Dr Elsey’s or Boxiecat Premium cat litters.
The bottom line is that they are all designed to keep allergies to a minimum, effectively seal and clump your cat’s waste, and make our jobs as poop scoopers (because that’s what we are, let’s be honest) easier.
Whichever you choose I hope you find the right litter for your household and manage your allergies better.
I’d love to hear any feedback from the community about any of these hypoallergenic cat litter brands or any others you’ve tried that I’ve not mentioned. Just drop me a comment below, thanks.
