Best Flushable Cat Litter

The least fun part of being a cat owner is cleaning out the litter box – am I right?

Did you know that there are some flushable cat litters on the market?

The best flushable cat litters make cleaning out the litter box a breeze, especially if your kitty’s box is in the bathroom.

No more messing around with bags and having smelly cat waste in your bins. It’s a more environmentally-friendly way of dealing with waste, and most importantly it’s quick and easy.

So, if you’re interested in which cat litters are the best for flushing and how to safely deal with your cat poop this way, read on!

How to Safely Flush Cat Litter

Two pieces of advice; firstly, only ever flush litter that specifically says it’s designed to be flushable.

Secondly, always check the instructions with the litter you’re using to see how the manufacturer recommends you go about flushing it.

However, as a rule of thumb, it’s a simple process, but there are a couple of things to be aware of.

Only flush the clump of litter that has your cat’s waste in, and let it soften in the toilet for a while before flushing it.

This means you’re flushing small clumps that any toilet will be able to deal with. Plus, the litter is designed to break down and flush easily so there should be no issues.

Better Way Eco-Fresh Flushable Cat Litter

Better Way Eco-Fresh Flushable Cat Litter

I’ve used this Better Way litter a number of times and what I (and my cats) like about it is that its small granules like a traditional litter.

It’s made with 100% natural Zeolite which is great for odor control and gives you those easy to scoop clumps you want to see that makes your life as a scooper easier.

They also use Sanel, which is extracted from tree resin and Better Way say it’s a smell that attracts cats and makes them more likely to use their box.

I’ve not tested this myself with a cat not using their box, but it’s something to keep in mind. I remember it smelled nice and fresh so I’m not complaining.

It’s not just the name either, they really do make some of the best litters in the world and their flushable, septic-safe litter is awesome.

I’ve used a few of their litters and confirm they live up to their claims. This litter clumps well so it’s easy to clean out, which is always a huge plus for cat owners, and of course, it can be flushed.

It smells fresh, doesn’t track around the home, and my cats have always been fine with the texture. Well worth checking out, especially if you’re a fan of the brand.

Garfield Flushable Cat Litter

Garfield Flushable Cat Litter

This is a fun looking litter and one for any Garfield fans. It’s not just a gimmick using Garfield’s face either, this litter performs really well and flushes to make cleaning up a mess-free and quick chore.

It’s a white litter too which is unusual. The reason it’s white is to help you identify any waste easily, as well as any potential illnesses that are identifiable by changes in the color of your cat’s urine – pretty cool.

Just remember to let the clumps soften in the toilet bowl before flushing. Otherwise, you might have a blockage problem (if so see below for tips on unblocking a toilet).

Other pro points include being dust-free, free from chemicals, excellent at clumping, biodegradable, and just all around easy to use and mess-free.

How to Unclog Cat Litter from a Toilet

How to Unclog Cat Litter from a Toilet

Toilets can become clogged or blocked from time-to-time as I’m sure you know all too well. If the flushable cat litter has caused a blockage don’t panic, I have some tips that should help you clear the blockage.

While rolling up your sleeves and unclogging a toilet is one of the least desirable problems. It’s worth doing it yourself to save the cost of calling out a plumber for what is a fairly routine thing to resolve.

I’ve never failed to unblock a toilet, sink, pipe, or any other plughole using these methods:

Method #1 – The Plunger

This will almost always unblock a toilet that’s primarily blocked with flushable cat litter as the litter is easy to break up with a little suction pressure.

Don’t be afraid to put some force in, give the toilet a good plunge until the water suddenly rushes away when the blockage moves.

If this is clearly making no difference after a few minutes try method #2 below.

Method #2 – Hot Water and Soap

Squirt some washing up liquid or a similar washing soap into the toilet. Nothing that will froth up too much and cause a mess though.

Then pour in some hot water, very hot is best. Let that sit for a few minutes to give it time to break down the blockage.

Then use the plunger to see if this gives you that extra edge to shift the blockage. If not, on to method #3.

Method #3 – The Toilet Snake

Sometimes the only way to shift a blockage is to physically push it. Before you roll up your sleeves and prepare yourself to put your hand down the pan there is a better option, a toilet snake.

The snake is a long piece of metal that bends around the basin and waste pipe so you can find the blockage and break it up.

You can pick them up at a fraction of the cost of calling a plumber from Amazon (below). They are really easy to use and come in handy for plugholes, drains, and other hard to reach places that water flows through.

Some Commonly Asked Questions About Flushing Cat Litter

Is Catsan Flushable?

I’ve taken a look at the Catsan range of litters and can’t find any that are flushable. So, no, as far as I can see Catsan is not flushable so don’t flush it.

They may make a flushable version since the time of writing this, or maybe they have it already but I can’t find it.

If you see a pack that says specifically that it’s flushable, then that’s fine. But I can’t see any Catsan liters on sale at the moment that are safe for flushing.

Can You Flush Wood Cat Litter down Toilet?

Not all wood cat litters are flushable, no. Just because the litter you’re using is not clay it doesn’t mean it’s flushable.

You should only flush cat litter that has been specially designed and is marketed as flushable.

Flushing anything else can cause a blockage, not just in your toilet but in the waste pipes outside your home too.

Can You Flush Pine Cat Litter?

The answer is the same as the previous question about flushing wood cat litter. You can’t flush any litter that isn’t specifically designed to be flushed, regardless of what it’s made of.

So, no. Please don’t flush pine cat litter down your toilet unless you want to try and block your toilet or upset your neighbors when you cause a more serious blockage in the waste pipes outside.
