Looking for Traditional Birman Cat Names and how to name your Birman the traditional way? (which I explain below)
Firstly, you’ve landed on the right page!
Secondly, lucky you! The Birman breed is one of the most lovable, social, loyal, and devoted cat breeds. So, I’m happy for you brining one into your home.
I haven’t owned one personally, but my brother-in-law has two Birmans (called Smudge and Roco), and I love visiting them.
Here’s everything you need to know about the naming tradition, and I’ve included a load of names to hopefully help you find that perfect name.
The Birman Cat Naming Tradition
One of the interesting nuances to naming a Birman cat is the Birman cat naming tradition of using a letter that corresponds to a year to start their name.
It’s a French tradition, but I know a lot of owners in the US also follow this tradition as it’s a fun way to name your cat, and the history there is really interesting.
Basically, how it works is that each year corresponds to a letter in the alphabet, and every year the letter moves along one.
Really simple, but I feel like I made it a litter harder to follow than it should be!
So, for example, this year (2019) is the letter Q. Not the easiest year to name a Birman, but I did give you a couple of ideas above for names starting with Q.
This means 2020 relates to the letter R, in 2021 you’d pick a name starting with S, and so on.
To give you a visual covering more years than you’ll ever need, here is a Birman Cat Naming Chart for you:
