Breeds of Savannah Cats and Their Personality Traits
You may have noticed a ‘F#’ prefix when Savannah cats are talked about. Basically, there are 6 main breeds of Savannah and they are classified from F1 through to F6.
The lower the number, the closer they are to their wild ancestor, the Serval. For example, this is the % of Serval in each of the breeds:
Generation of Savannah | % of Serval |
---|---|
F1 | 57% |
F2 | 35% |
F3 | 21% |
F4 | 16% |
F5 | 11% |
The characteristics, and personality and look of the Savannah also correspond to a Serval according to the % that’s in the breed.
For example, F1 is the largest and most ‘wild’ of the breeds topping out at around 25 lbs. While the F5 or even the F6 are the most domestic and the most manageable at around 19 lbs.
Overall, Savannah cats are very curious and fun cats. They can feel overwhelming to new owners because they are so large and athletic, but they are big softies.
Something to be aware of that separates Savannahs from a lot of other cat breeds is how they form relationships with people in the home.
They tend to form very strong bonds with just one or two people. Which is great as they will be loyal to you and your partner and respond to what you’re asking them. In large, busy households, however, it can be a strange dynamic.
Going down to the F3 and F4 you’re getting more into the lap cat territory. Albeit a large cat that takes up a lot more space than a tabby!
How Much Do Savannah Kittens and Cats Cost?
Savannahs are one of, if not the most expensive exotic cats on the market. The prices vary greatly depending on the generation, with the further the generation is away from the Serval the less they cost.

Do Savannah Cats Make Good Pets?
Savannahs do make good pets, yes.
Being one of the largest exotic breeds, Savannah cats do have some unique needs. You’re going to need some large, sturdy cat furniture to keep them entertained indoors and put aside plenty of play time.
They also have more complex dietary needs than a regular tabby. This is something the breeder you’re buying from will be best placed to advise you on.
It’s a good idea to note down any questions you have for the breeder you will be buying your Savannah from, no matter how trivial you think they are.
